Linalool, the calm chemical: what 11 trials say about lavender

Lavender is the wellness world's safe bet. It's been on shelves for as long as shelves have existed. Everyone's grandmother had a sachet of dried lavender somewhere in the house. It's in everything from cleaning products to baby skincare to airport gift shops.

That ubiquity makes it easy to dismiss. Familiar feels unremarkable, and the wellness industry has a habit of overclaiming on familiar ingredients until the claims become noise.

What's slightly surprising is that lavender is one of the few aromatic ingredients with serious clinical research behind it. Not folklore, not marketing copy — a body of peer-reviewed clinical trials, including a 2023 systematic review covering eleven studies and 972 participants.

Here's what the research actually says, what it doesn't say, and why one specific chemical compound in lavender does most of the work.

Meet linalool

Lavender essential oil is a chemical cocktail. Like all plant extracts, it contains dozens of different compounds at varying concentrations, and the relative proportions vary by species, growing region, and extraction method.

The two compounds present in the highest concentrations — and the ones most heavily studied for their aromatic effects — are linalool and linalyl acetate. Together, they typically make up 50–70% of true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil by volume.

Linalool is a small, fat-soluble terpene alcohol with a soft, floral, slightly woody aroma. Linalyl acetate is its ester form — chemically related, and metabolised back into linalool in the body via enzymes called β-esterases.

For practical purposes, both compounds work together to produce what we recognise as the lavender effect.

The 11-trial review

In 2023, researchers published a systematic review in Healthcare looking specifically at clinical trials of lavender inhalation for anxiety reduction. The review covered all trials published between 2018 and 2022, included 11 separate studies and a total of 972 participants, and applied standard systematic review methodology to the available evidence.

The headline finding: 10 of the 11 trials reported significant reductions in anxiety following lavender inhalation. The effects were measured both psychologically — through self-reported anxiety scales — and physiologically, through markers like heart rate and blood pressure.[1]

The studies covered a range of settings: pre-surgery anxiety, dental procedures, ICU patients, healthy volunteers under induced stress, postpartum women, hemodialysis patients. The breadth is worth noting — it's not all one type of participant in one type of room.

The review's authors note that effect sizes vary, individual responses differ, and the methodology of the underlying trials isn't uniform. But the directional finding is consistent: lavender inhalation, across multiple settings and populations, was associated with measurable reductions in anxiety markers.

How linalool appears to work

The mechanism research is more recent and still being mapped, but the broad picture looks like this.

Linalool crosses the blood-brain barrier through nasal inhalation, where it appears to interact with several neurotransmitter systems. The most studied interactions involve:

  • NMDA receptors. Linalool has shown affinity for the glutamate NMDA receptor in cell-based assays, with possible modulatory effects on excitatory neurotransmission.[2]
  • Voltage-dependent calcium channels. Both linalool and linalyl acetate appear to inhibit these channels, which play a role in neuronal excitability.
  • The serotonin transporter (SERT). Linalool shows binding affinity here as well, suggesting possible serotonergic modulation.

None of this means lavender works like a pharmaceutical anxiolytic. It doesn't. The effect sizes in the clinical literature are smaller than those of prescription medications, and the mechanisms are less direct. What it does suggest is that the calming effect isn't placebo — there are real biochemical pathways involved.

The Roman chamomile partnership

Lavender is the more familiar, more obviously "calming" ingredient — the one most people would expect in a wind-down blend. Roman chamomile is the more nuanced cousin, with its own GABAergic mechanism (covered in a separate post) and a softer, slightly fruitier aromatic profile.

The blend uses both to create a layered effect: lavender carries the bulk of the calming signal, Roman chamomile rounds out the bottom notes and adds depth that lavender alone wouldn't have. Two ingredients. Pure essential oils only. No synthetics, no fillers, no fragrance compounds added.

What the research doesn't promise

It's worth being honest about the limits, because the wellness industry routinely isn't.

  • The clinical effects are modest. Lavender doesn't replace therapy, medication, or treatment for diagnosed anxiety disorders.
  • The studies vary in quality. Some are rigorous; others are exploratory. The 11-trial review is useful precisely because it pulls the consistent findings out of mixed methodology.
  • Effects are short-term. Most studies measured acute anxiety reduction immediately after exposure, not long-term mental health outcomes.
  • Individual responses vary. Some people respond noticeably to aromatic lavender; others don't.
  • Aromatic use isn't the same as oral lavender capsules (Silexan), which have a separate research literature and different effect profile.
